International Filmfestival Dortmund 28. March 1. April 2001 KISSPROOF
How this song has
engraved itself on the hearts of generations of moviegoers! Even after
hearing it for the hundredth time, one gets a shiver down the spin, goose
pimples all over. But the kiss - the symbol of love and affection - can
also denote treachery and abandonment. kissproof is of course the lipstick that survives a kiss. Having begun its march of triumph in the 1920s under the name of "lip rouge", lipstick became the indispensable accessory in every woman's handbag and on every woman's lips. It has been a sign of sensuality and femininity every since. With or without rouge, the kiss has always been good for controversy and scandal. The very first kiss in the history of motion pictures in 1896 - the legendary IRWIN-RICE-KISS incensed the American upholders of moral standards. The permanent wrangling between the studios and the censors eventually led in 1930 to the set of conventions known as "Hay's Code" in which - down to the finest detail - it was laid down what may appear on the screen or not. Accordingly, no kiss was allowed to last more than 30 seconds. Yet even then the audiences were fully aware that the briefest of kisses was meant to represent what was not permitted on screen: sex. KISSPROOF then, are those films that tell of the love of one's life, of fulfilment, of heartbreak. Whether the story is long or short, the question "Why?" will always be answered differently and and new.
