ANTÔNIA
Preta, Barbarah, Mayah and Lena live in Vila Brasilândia on the
outskirts of São Paulo. All four of them work as background
singers, but they share the dream to once take center stage and sing.
They decide to fight for their dream and start a career as the band
Antônia. Endowed with talent, a manager and a repertoire from
rap, pop, soul and mbp (música popular brasileira) they embark
on the rocky road of club and party gigs. But just when they have their
first success and the way out of misery seems to lie ahead, they are
caught up with everyday life and its ubiquitous poverty, male
chauvinism and violence.

ASK THE WIND
Ayako Mogi, D/J 2002, 57’, documentary
Pianist Misa Shimomura and violinist Saikou Miyajima are a couple,
living with their children in the South-West of Japan. He occasionally
works as a causual labourer, she as a nurse in a retirement home. Which
doesn’t alter the fact that, primarily, they are both musicians
dedicated to the cause of improvised music. Ayako Mogi’s work has
always seemed to be composed with a musical sensibility. In ASK THE
WIND, she tackles the relationship between sound and image, teasing out
the aesthetics of the everyday. The face of a baby crying or the
reflections in a puddle as rubber-booted kiddies splash through it are
as interesting.

BEYOND THE ROCKS
Sam Wood, USA 1922, 81’, silent film with Gloria Swanson
BEYOND THE ROCKS takes us from England via the Alps and Paris to the
Algerian desert, thus providing the wonderful Gloria Swanson with any
number of opportunities to (a) adapt her wardrobe, exotic and
orientalising at the best of times, to each change of scenery and (b)
cast her famously intense gazes from under the rims of voluminous hats
and turbans. She plays Theodora, a captain’s daughter, who in a
marriage of convenience weds an old and corpulent but wealthy parvenu
in order to ensure a certain affluence for her father and sisters. Said
gentleman may be kind-hearted but it he isn’t. Lord Bracondale,
though, the sublime and sleek Rudolph Valentino, simply oozes it and,
what’s more, comes to our heroine’s rescue in
life-threatening situations … twice.
Live accompaniment on the piano by Ruth Bieri (CH).

Patricia Plattner, CH/A/F 2005, 55’, documentary
Patricia Plattner visits Vienna, Paris and Lima in search of the
quintessence and the origins of the waltz which is not a specifically
Austrian invention. People across Europe were stepping out to the
three-four beat of the musette where the accordion set the tone, not
the violin. Meanwhile in Peru, the Creole Waltz also enjoys huge
popularity. Here you don’t just dance, you sing to the sound of
guitar and cajon.

Mara Matuschka, A 2005, 14’, experimental short film
We witness the genesis of a diva. Glamorous dresses, masks and gestures

CRAZY
Heddy Honigmann, NL 1999, 97’, documentary
The film’s title song CRAZY (Seal) will forever remind one UN
commander of the horrors he personally witnessed during a bomb attack
on a Sarajevo market. We join Heddy Honigmann, as she lets Dutch
soldiers talk about their military deployments in the Balkans,
Cambodia, Lebanon and Ruanda. Each one of them had a particular song
that helped him come down or override the fear. With great skill and
sensitivity, the director observes how the veterans give themselves up
to the music and to the memories. It’s as if the music is the
only key available to unlock these people’s suppressed emotions.

FOREVER
Heddy Honigmann, NL 2006, 93’, documentary
The Père-Lachaise in Paris is one of the most famous and
beautiful cemeteries in the world. For it is here that renowned artists
– such as Edith Piaf and Jim Morrison as well as Chopin and
Proust – were to find their final resting place, their graves
still a destination for pilgrims from all over the world. Heddy
Honigmann draws the visitors to Père-Lachaise Cemetery into
conversation. Chance encounters reveal details of intimate
relationships. This place of the dead seems increasingly to act as a
source of inspiration for the living. Ultimately, though, FOREVER poses
serious questions about the transience of life and the eternity of art.

GEGEN DIE WAND (Head On)
Fatih Akin, D 2004, 123’, feature film with Sibel Kekilli
In order to escape her restrictive parents, Sibel asks the cynical
alcoholic Cahit to enter into a fictitious marriage. Cahit, to whom
Turkish conventions and traditions mean nothing, eventually agrees to
her plea. They share an apartment, but not life.Sibel enjoys her
freedom: she dances into the wee hours, sleeps with various men,
celebrates her lust for life. But Cahit also gains new courage to face
life from living with the young woman. It is too late when they come to
realise that they have actually fallen in love with each other.
When Sibel Kekilli gave her debut in HEAD ON in 2004, the force of her
acting was a tectonic event in German film. For her multilayered
interpretation of the role of hungry-for-life German-Turkish girl
Sibel, Kekilli was awarded the German Film Prize for best actress.

Anja Salomonowitz, A 2006, 72’, feature film
Anja Salomonowitz chooses an unusual approach to the theme of
trafficking of women. Her film is based on actual stories of trafficked
women, from whom the director has written her documentary screenplay.
The stories are told not by actresses, but by people who could be in a
certain relation to the events and locations of the film: a customs
officer, a village resident, a brothel waiter, a diplomat and a taxi
driver. A film about false promises, exploitation and disappointment.

(Opera Fever)
Katharina Rupp, D/CH 2004, 70’, Documentary
Katharina Rupp embarks on a musical journey to Italy’s major
opera houses, going on stage and behind the scenes to film the doers,
the opera lovers, the stake-holders, the faded personalities and the
petty criminals – all of whom (in spite of the fierce opposition
and rivalry) are bound by an unconditional love of opera. OPERNFIEBER
is the story of the deeply rooted popularity of this art form in Italy.

ORNETTE: MADE IN AMERICA
Shirley Clarke, USA 1985, documentary
The US-American jazz musician (saxophone, trumpet, violin) and composer
Ornette Coleman, born in 1930, has become known as the pionier of Free
Jazz. Shirley Clark in her documentary ORNETTE: MADE IN AMERICA pays
the visionary an exceptional tribute. Like Coleman himself, this film
will not fit any category. Clarke composes her own work using concert
footage, computer animation, interviews and play scenes to capture
Coleman’s idiosyncratic musical style in pictures. It took Clarke
20 years to finish the film. Rapid zooms, cuts and sequences introduce
the viewer into the artist’s world.

PAPA GENA
Laila Pakalnina, LT 2001, 10’, short film
The Papagena Aria from Mozart’s Magic Flute is being played on
headphones to people of all ages and both genders in their everyday
surroundings. While they listen to the music, the camera records their
reactions in their faces and their gestures. Laila Pakalnina portrays
people in their surroundings and the landscape they live in. In
juxtaposition to the emotional music this makes for impressions that
are very personal, surprising and comical, at times.

Petra Dolleman’s and Peter J. A. van Bergen’s performance
is an improvisation with both sounds and images: the musical
improvisations of van Bergen (clarinet, saxophone and electronic

work with prepared images (photography, drawings, animations, video) as
well as live drawings and recordings. The live performance of pdq^d with
its images and sounds is an ever renewed quest for the fundamental ties

RISING TONES CROSS
Ebba Jahn, USA/D 1984, 111’, documentary
The atmospheric imagery of RISING TONES CROSS offers us a glimpse of
the life and the experiences of mostly Afro-American jazz musicians.
Ebba Jahn took a look around New York with Wuppertal bass legend Peter
Kowald in 1984 and made pictures of musicians whose music has rarely
been recorded. A few of them, like Don Cherry and Jeanne Lee, are no
longer alive, whereas others, like Gayle and William Parker, had their
breakthrough long after the film was made and are now leading figures
of the new free jazz wave.

SHOW PEOPLE
King Vidor, USA 1928, 82’, silent film with Marion Davies
SHOW PEOPLE, an homage to the halcyon days of the slapstick comedies,
is an inside view of Hollywood’s studio system and a satire on
the role games played behind the scenes at the Dream Factory. The plot
as such is based on Gloria Swanson’s rise to fame but also on the
career of the leading lady here, Marion Davies, who was able to unfold
her gift for comedy in numerous role changes. Another special feature
is the large number of stars making guest appearances. At lunch in a
fictive studio, for example, we see virtually all the Hollywood VIPs of
the time – plus minor roles taken by stars such as Mary Pickford,
Charles Chaplin and Gloria Swanson, not to mention director King Vidor.
SHOW PEOPLE received high praise from the critics of its day and was
one of the last big boxoffice hits of the silent movie era.
Live accompaniment on the piano by Joachim Bärenz.

WHOSE IS THIS SONG?
Adela Peeva, BG 2003, 70’, documentary
Adela Peeva first hears that song in a restaurant in Istanbul. With her
at the table are friends from a number of Balkan countries, all of whom
start to hum along in recognition. Each of them claims that the song
comes from their country. So the film-maker sets off on a tour through
Europe in an attempt to find the source of that song. But what began as
a relatively straightforward research trip soon turns into a
sociological and historical study of misunderstanding between the
peoples of a (Balkan) region scarred by ethnic hatred and war.
Tragicomically, the documentary exposes the craziness of national myth
building and the all too human need for people to set themselves apart
from neighbours who in real life are pretty much similar.
