School Film Programme for Children and Teenagers in Dortmund

April, 11th to 15th 2005

In the discussion as to how children and teenagers should approach film and digital images, “media competence” has become one of the catchwords of recent years. The way children, especially the younger ones, receive film and films has been the subject of some criticism by parents and educationalists alike.

The media are an accepted part of everyday life, for the little ones too, and it is not surprising that legal guardians are demanding that signposts be put up in the ever-growing media jungle. However, films – just like literature – can present positive role models, suggest alternative courses of action, and convey knowledge about other cultures and lifestyles.

Viewing a full-length film in a movie theatre is quite a different experience from watching TV. The darkened theatre, the communal experience, the size of the screen and the wonderful sound all make going to the cinema a memorable event. Young children in particular view films with different eyes than adults. They soak up the film with all of their senses, join in the action, are quick to offer comments or advice to the characters and often take part enthusiastically during the subsequent discussion of the film.

Even though children’s ability to understand films on the cognitive level is highly developed, the emotional impact of films should not be underestimated. Judicious film selection is very important here. This is the reason we at femme totale are more than careful with our age group recommendations and why we offer opportunities for discussion after showing only part of the film.

This year’s film festival offers some powerful stories, stories in which authentic figures have to deal with situations the school students in the audience should be able to identify with. These are situations involving friendship, love, conflict, dealing with violence, different family constellations, cultural differences and tolerance and, ultimately, the individual's search for a place in society, and the problems of growing up.
