Dortmund Award for Women Directors of Photography

The task of a director of photography is simple: to record what is happening in front of the camera. The process itself is highly complex, though. Artistic visual ideas must be technically realised. In no other field of film production do the tools of the trade change as rapidly as they do in the recording of moving pictures: film and video equipment is available in countless variations, new and improved technologies in film and digital cameras appear on the market in shorter and shorter intervals.

22 nominations from all over Germany have been made for this year’s Dortmund Prize of Photography. Final year projects and projects of the first two years following graduation were called to enter. As compared to prior festivals, both the number of feature and documentary films exceeding 60 minutes and the cinematographic confidence has increased, which is also true of the short films.

With this prize the International Women’s Film Festival Dortmund½Cologne continues the sponsoring of next generation women directors of photography in Germany that was initiated by femme totale. The € 5.000 prize will call the industry’s attention to new talents and intends to encourage young women behind the camera in their choice of profession.
